A Simple Love Story That Touches Your Heart: Raincoat Movie Review

If you want to watch a movie that makes you think about Love, Love which is of a simple persons not like bollywood Movies real Love story that was never completed , Raincoat (2004) is perfect for you. This film starring Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai this movie is not like typical Bollywood movie with songs and dances it's something much deeper.

What The Story Is About

The movie is simple but a lot heart touching. Main character  Manoj roll played by Ajay Devgan is a man from a small town who has lost his job and in need of money to start a business. He travels to Kolkata to ask old friends for help, but after that he decides to visit his former lover Neeru roll played by  Aishwarya Rai, who left him years ago to marry a rich man.

When Manoj reach at Neeru's house on a rainy day, wearing a raincoat borrowed from his friend, both of them start pretending their lives are wonderful. Manoj acts like he's a successful TV producer, while Neeru tells about her wealthy husband. But as the afternoon goes on, we slowly realize that both are lying to protect each other's feelings.

The Beautiful Sadness

What makes this movie special is how honest it is about human emotions. Both Manoj and Neeru are actually struggling in their lives, but they love each other so much that they don't want the other person to feel bad. This creates a bittersweet situation where their lies come from a place of deep care and sacrifice.

Director Rituparno Ghosh tells this story in such a gentle way that you feel like you're watching real people, not movie characters. The film was shot in just 16 days, mostly in one room, but it feels complete and meaningful.

Why The Rain Matters

The constant rain in the movie isn't just weather - it represents the sadness and trapped feelings of both characters. The raincoat itself becomes a symbol of protection and connection between them. When Neeru borrows Manoj's raincoat to go shopping, she secretly leaves her gold jewelry in the pockets as a gift to help him, showing how much she still cares.

Great Acting

Both Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai give some of their best performances here. Devgan shows Manoj's quiet desperation perfectly, while Rai strips away all her glamour to play a woman whose dreams have been crushed. Their chemistry feels real and painful at the same time.

The movie also features Annu Kapoor as a landlord who reveals the truth about Neeru's situation, adding another layer to the story.

A Different Kind of Bollywood Film

Raincoat won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and is often called a modern classic. It's based on the famous short story "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, which is about people sacrificing for love.

Unlike most Bollywood movies, this one has no songs, no dancing, and no happy ending. Instead, it focuses on real human emotions and the small sacrifices people make for those they love. It's the kind of movie that stays with you long after you watch it, making you think about your own relationships and choices.

This film proves that sometimes the most powerful stories are the simplest ones - about two people who still love each other but know they can never be together, finding a way to help each other one last time
